Dress for the times!  It’s 50’s Weekend!

Did you know…

According to the University of Vermont’s website (www.uvm.edu/landscape/dating/clothing_and_hair/1950s_clothing_women.php),” Christian Dior’s “New Look” of 1947 continued to influence the fashions of the 1950s. Unpadded, rounded shoulders, shapely bust lines, closely-defined waistlines, and full, billowy skirts define the new, more feminine wardrobe. Blouses, jeans, and long, narrow skirts were also quite popular.”

Some ideas…

For girls:

  • Circle skirts including poodle skirts (which had other motifs besides the poodle, including mice, dogs, cars, telephones, and martini glasses).
  • Pencil skirts or dresses
  • Button down blouses of white, pastel or striped with collars, were worn snug, close-fitting, and always tucked in.
  • Saddle shoes paired with white ankle socks.
  • Jeans, cuffed or Capri-style
  • Gingham blouse, hoop earrings, stiletto shoes, bandana

For boys:

  • “Ivy League” look with letter sweater and nice shirt, slacks, dress shoes
  • Cardigan sweater with tie, slacks, loafer style shoes
  • “Greaser” look with white t-shirt, leather jacket, baggy cuffed jeans, aviater style sunglasses, motor cycle boots, and greased back hair
